We Rumbled, Some Fumbled… Others Tumbled

On the weekend of the 14th and 15th of April, the call Wits sent out was answered.. A call to Live, a call to Debate… a call to Rumble!

Debaters, Welcome to the 2012 Gauteng Provincial Championships.

Over a hundred individuals showed up, representing Institutions from Gauteng, Limpopo, other parts of South Africa and some from as far afield as Botswana.

This was the first ever Provincials to be hosted FREE OF CHARGE and as WDU president was quoted as saying, “All you need is the platform, and the individuals there will provide the debate”

The event was hosted at the newly built Wits Science Stadium. Construction was finished in late 2011 and the three tier complex houses 4 state of the art 200+ seater auditoriums, a double storey Physics and Chemistry Lab and in its bold display of primary colors is nicely contrasted by the decidedly rustic Old Grand Stand and announcers tower.

The First round kicked off on the morning of the 14th with CA for the event Deborah Nixon and her team of DCA’s announcing the Motion and the hundred strong contingent of speakers getting their customary 15 minutes of prep time, working towards that make or break 7min of fame. There were also a sufficient number of Adjudicators at the Tournament, some Institutionalized and others Independent but enough to provide  on average a panel of 4 per debate.

A total of four rounds were run on Day 1. On Day two a final Round 5 before the break to the semi finals was announced. Wits was to have three teams in the Semi Finals of which two would find themselves in the Final against each other and a team from Pretoria and another from UBOTS.

DCA Paidamoyo chaired the final event flanked by some of the other DCA’s and two Adjudicators bumped up to this prestigious Panel on Merit of which one was Charity Makhala the CA at UBOTS.

Ultimately, in that final there may have been scores of spectators, 16 speakers, 8 teams, 5 adjudicators and 4 teams but there could only have been ONE winner. In a unanimous decision Chris Wood and Michael Macklin of Wits Team C were crowned Gauteng Provincial Champions.

And so for the third year running… WITS ARE KINGS!

The Union extends its thanks to every debater who showed their face here that weekend. We thank the Union members who worked to make sure that there was an event to arrive to and we thank those members of Wits Management without whose consent and support this could not have occured.
